मीथेन का 60 फीसद हिस्सा मानवीय गतिविधियों से निकलता है. वैसे तो वायुमंडल में कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड की मात्रा बहुत ज्यादा है लेकिन मीथेन निकलने के पहले 20 सालों में जलवायु तंत्र को गर्म करने में 84 गुणा ज्यादा प्रभावी है.
